JATULIS’ GARDEN

THE STONE LABYRINTH

THE STORY OF THE JATULIS’ GARDEN

In the ancient world, filled with magic, witches, gods, and goddesses; in the cellars and pits dug into the mud of Finnish riverbanks… there lived creatures. Creatures that no humans could treat as friends. Those creatures were named jatuli, after the Norse giants, jötunn. Old Finns liked to call them metelinväki. Meteli in Finnish means noise or ruckus – this nickname came from the clamour that locals made to scare off the big mutes whenever they met. Even though they lived separately from the villagers, the jatulis found it challenging to exist next to humans. The powerful Finnish giants didn’t enjoy the same type of lifestyle as
their noisy mortal neighbours. Instead, they treasured solitude and silence. Immersed in their magic and secure in the darkness of their caves, they desired one thing and one thing only: a non-spoiled quietness.
Complete silence in which to practise their craft. Conflicted by the situation with their cohabitants, these silent giants decided to isolate themselves from all living beings. To that end, they built stone labyrinths: the mystical jatulintarhat, or Jatulis’ Gardens.

THE SECRET OF JATULIS’ GARDENS

Whenever they saw them, the local people were filled with curiosity and a desire to traverse Jatulis’ Gardens.
But… the magnificent stone creations, however beautiful they seemed at the first glimpse, contained deadly secrets hidden deep inside. The giants had bewitched the labyrinths, placing mystical spells to make it
impossible for any trespassers to survive. For centuries, the magnificent gardens remained an undiscovered mystery and the gravesite of daredevils.

Time passed and many brave warriors tried to conquer the maze but failed to succeed…

Jatulis’ Garden The Stone Labyrinth

One day, a talented watchmaker decided to try his luck with the mystical Jatulis’ Gardens. He fervently wished to be the first mortal in centuries to find the truth and solve the mystery of the stone labyrinths.
“Many brave men before him tried and failed. How could he find a way out of the maze?” the people wondered.

The watchmaker spent many days and sleepless night studying ancient runes and myths, looking for answers. Day after day passed and he still couldn’t find his way out of the magic labyrinth. Discouraged, the watchmaker almost lost his faith. Deep within the labyrinth, he sat down in the darkness, pensive. Then he opened his mind to solitude …

Only in complete silence can you find your peace.

DISCOVERING FINNISH SILENCE

As he sat alone, an inner voice whispered: Only in complete silence can you find your peace.
For a Finn, silence means time for thought. Time to create and discover. The answer that had eluded him finally materialised and the gate to the mysterious stone labyrinth opened before Rönkkö. The way to escape the giants’ sorcery lay within what was most cherished by the jatuli – Finnish silence. Rönkkö, the watchmaker, became the first person in living memory to find their way out of the mystical maze.
As a master craftsman, he felt an overwhelming need to pass on the ancient knowledge. This is why he created his classic masterpiece: the Stone Labyrinth Inspired by the giants’ desires, spells, and Finnish mythology, Rönkkö carefully wove a clue to the mythical truth into each of his watches. Each piece is handcrafted in traditional Finnish silence and features a complex labyrinth-textured dial.
